Fifteen

Adrian rises to his feet, glancing at me uncertainly. “You’re kidding, right? I thought those were a myth.”

“Most people think the fae are a myth, too,” I say. “But they aren’t, and neither are shapeshifters. That’s one right there.” I point at the dog. “I can sense its magic.”

Adrian still looks skeptical, but Tristan, who was there when I encountered a creature just like this one on Saturday, is slowly edging toward me, eying the dog with distrust.

The dog—shapeshifter who has up till now only been watching things play out, steps forward, the air around them going oddly translucent before their form stretches outward and upward into a genderless humanoid figure with light brown skin.

Adrian makes a choked noise and grabs my arm, but the shapeshifter ignores him, their gaze focused solely on me, their head tilted to the side in a quizzical manner.

“I had thought that night in the woods…” They step closer. “But I was uncertain.”

The shapeshifter’s eyes begin to change, running through a slide show of colors before landing on one that matches my own. Just like the shapeshifter on Saturday did.

This is not only a shapeshifter, it’s the same one.

“Why did you attack me?” I ask, my voice level, even though I’m freaking out on the inside. I’m pretty sure if this thing wants to hurt us, it easily could. Even Adrian might struggle to fight off a full-grown grizzly or something similar.

“I needed to speak to you,” says the shapeshifter. “I have done so before, but only within the constraints of her commands, so I was not sure how to go about it. I thought…the familiar wolf form might relax you, but it did not.”

Her commands? They must mean Marie.

My mind goes back to Saturday night and how the giant golden wolf had knocked me to the ground and then appeared to be trying to speak.

I inch backward, though the shapeshifter doesn’t stop closing in on me. “Why? What were you trying to say?”

“I saw the glamour placed on him when he returned the night before. I knew they had been testing you, and I wanted to warn you not to show yourself.”

They must be referring to the glamour I placed on Louis after the shifters accosted us in the parking garage to prevent him from reporting anything.

“Warn me? Why would you want to do that?” I ask.

The shapeshifter doesn’t answer, instead their features settle in to something almost familiar, a girl with brown hair and a plain face who stands about my height. Why does her face look so familiar?

“You were there that day in the gym,” says Adrian, shock clear in his voice.

“Yes, I was,” replies the shapeshifter, glancing past my shoulder at Adrian. Her focus returns to me. “I was attempting to help you discover your magic.”

My eyes widen the pieces click into place. The shapeshifter was the girl beside me in PE class who told me putting my emotions and intention into a spell can help strengthen my castings—kind of like with sigils.
